  • Del Potro, Federer advance in Dubai

    2/28/12 10:17 PM | Cheryl Murray
Juan Martin Del Potro and Roger Federer successfully moved into the second round at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

Roger Federer (2) def. Michael Llodra 6-0, 7-6(6)

For a little more than a set, Roger Federer was utterly dominant in his first-round match. The Swiss Maestro was brilliant off both wings, with his passing shot doing particular damage to the serve-and-volleying Michael Llodra.

Every shot Federer hit seemed to go in, and his backhand, which has historically been his problem shot, was in top form. Llodra failed to win a single game as the first set whizzed by with a flurry of winners from the Federer racket.

Llodra pulled himself together somewhat in the second set. The audience applauded enthusiastically for the Frenchman as he won his first game. As Llodra’s game began to improve, Federer’s level dipped ever so slightly and Llodra was eventually able to force a tiebreaker.

The Frenchman played a good tiebreaker, even earning himself a set point, though it was on Federer’s serve. He couldn’t quite pull it out and Federer pocketed the match in straight sets.

Juan Martin Del Potro (8) def. Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 7-6(5)

This was a bit of a sloppy match, with Alexandr Dolgopolov’s serve deserting him and Juan Martin Del Potro visibly exhausted.

Del Potro managed to get through the most of the match without being broken. The Argentine was serving for the match at 5-4 in the second when Dolgopolov finally secured his first break of the match. The Ukrainian took Del Potro to a tiebreaker, but he was unable to take advantage of the opportunity.

The Argentine, who got to the finals in Rotterdam and won Marseille, is playing his third consecutive week and will face qualifier Andrey Golubev in the second round.
