  • Tomic beats Haas, Sweeting double-breadsticks Young

    2/28/12 6:28 AM | Ricky Dimon
Bernard Tomic is through to round two in Delray Beach after taking out Tommy Haas on Monday. Denis Istomin also advances with an easy win over Matthew Ebden.

    (8) Bernard Tomic d. Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-3

Tomic kicked off his campaign at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships with a straight-set victory over Haas on Monday night. The 19-year-old Aussie struck five aces and did not double-fault a single time as he advanced to the second round after one hour and 11 minutes of play.

Haas, 14 years older than his opponent at 33, broke back in the first set for 3-3 but dropped serve for a second time with the pressure on at 4-5. One break was all Tomic needed in set two because he dropped a mere three points in five service games. Next up for the No. 8 seed is either Memphis champion Jurgen Melzer or qualifier Tim Smyczek.

    Denis Istomin d. Matthew Ebden 6-2, 6-3

Istomin remained in fine form by dismissing Ebden in one hour and 18 minutes during first-round action in Delray Beach on Monday. The Uzbek lost his opener in Memphis, but he was coming off a runner-up showing in San Jose. Having been able to rest, Istomin was back in business for this one and he fired seven aces without dropping serve once.

Two breaks of serve were more than enough for the world No. 51 in the opening set because he saved all five of the break points he faced. The decisive break came when Ebden dropped serve for a third time at 3-4 in the second. Istomin promptly closed out the match on serve and he now awaits either Andy Roddick or Philipp Petzschner.

In other results, Ryan Sweeting clobbered Donald Young 6-1, 6-1 and Dudi Sela dismissed wild card Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-3.
