  • Isner, Gulbis advance to Delray Beach quarters

    3/1/12 5:11 AM | Ricky Dimon
John Isner books his spot in the Delray Beach quarterfinals with a straight-set win over Ryan Sweeting on Wednesday. Ernests Gulbis also advances, having overcome Steve Darcis in three.

    (1) John Isner d. Ryan Sweeting 6-3, 6-4

Isner fired 10 aces while double-faulting just once and saved all five of the break points he faced to defeat Sweeting in one hour and seven minutes during second-round action at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Wednesday night. The 11th-ranked American jumped ahead with an immediate break in the second game of the match and fought off three break points to make the break stand up.

Sweeting, who had crushed Donald Young 6-1, 6-1 in his opener, at least kept himself within striking distance but again one donation of serve was one too many in the second. Isner struck midway through the set and saved two more break points before serving out the proceedings at 5-4. Next up for the top seed is a quarterfinal showdown against Bernard Tomic.

    Ernests Gulbis d. Steve Darcis 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3

Gulbis wasted an early lead but recovered to beat Darcis in two hours and 10 minutes on Wednesday afternoon in Delray Beach. The Latvian squandered multiple advantages in the first set--a break, set points in two different games at 5-4 and 6-5, and two mini-breaks in the tiebreaker. As a result, Darcis stormed out of nowhere to steal the opening frame of play.

Despite the disappointment, however, Gulbis had more than enough left in the tank. The world No. 78 won six consecutive games to dominate the second set then took complete control with a break at 3-2 in the third. Darcis did well to hold from 0-30 down at 2-5, but Gulbis closed out the match on serve one game later and clinched victory with his 10th ace. Next up for Gulbis is qualifier Marinko Matosevic, an upset winner over Alex Bogomolov.
