  • Nieminen ousts Cilic, Roddick overcomes Petzschner

    2/29/12 5:00 AM | Ricky Dimon
Marin Cilic's first match of 2012 ends with a three-set loss to Jarkko Nieminen. Andy Roddick advances to the second round with a three-set win over Philipp Petzschner.

    Jarkko Nieminen d. (2) Marin Cilic 6-3, 3-6, 6-2

Playing his first match of the year in a comeback from knee problems, Cilic put up a good fight but eventually succumbed to Nieminen after one hour and 41 minutes during opening-round action at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships on Tuesday afternoon. Cilic got broken in his first service game to fall behind 2-0 and Nieminen served out the opener the rest of the way.

The 6'6'' Croat battled back nicely in the second. He took advantage of absolutely dismal serving by his opponent (33 percent) to break twice before closing out the set on serve at 5-3. The final set stayed on serve en route to a 3-2 Nieminen advantage. Nieminen promptly earned two consecutive breaks, the latter of which came to 5-2 to finish off the proceedings. Next up for the Finn is Dudi Sela.

    (4) Andy Roddick vs. Philipp Petzschner 4-6, 6-4, 6-3

In the midst of a hard-luck 2012 campaign, Roddick earned a much-needed win by overcoming Petzschner in one hour and 39 minutes on Tuesday night. Petzschner got off to a fast start by saving two break points in his opening service game then breaking serve in the third game of the math. The 61st-ranked German also battled out of a 0-40 deficit midway through the set and he consolidated his lead the rest of the way.

Roddick turned the tide in the second. The 29-year-old American got broken at love immediately after earning a break of his own, but his second break of the day came at 5-4 to end the set in style. Roddick broke again for a 2-0 advantage in the third then fought off three beak points en route to 3-0. From there it was all over for Petzschner, who managed to hold only once more and saw his opponent serve things out at love at 5-1.
