It's a first Los Angeles final for Andy Roddick. Denis Gremelmayr was no match for the top seed, outgunned 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday night
Having eliminated Marat Safin and Feliciano Lopez, Gremelmayr was expected to provide Roddick with something of a test. However, against the top players on a big court it's vital to get off to a good start. Gremelmayr failed to do that, he played a nervy game at 1-2, double-faulting twice to give Roddick a 3-1 lead.
The German struggled to deal with Roddick's intense firepower on serve, his only answer was to stay way, way back when returning. However Roddick has had plenty of experience of this against the clay-courters and immediately had the answer, serve-volleying very effectively
Gremelmayr likes the dropshot and it certainly drew Safin out of his comfort zone on Friday. However, despite his big frame, Roddick has a lot of pace about the court and once he spotted the trend he was always alert to the threat and even responding with touch shots of his own
Gremelmayr rallied briefly at the start of the second but Roddick brushed off several break points and broke once more in the 4th game. Victory was his in just 61 minutes
With the Olympic tennis event beginning today it was inevitable that more questions would pop-up post-match on Roddick's non-participation. The American revealed that his decision had been made predominantly to avoid the exhaustion of the travel to the Far East and the strenuous playing conditions. Having already competed at Athens 2004 had made the decision easier
