Roger Federer gets through a tough first-round test in Cincinnati on Tuesday, beating Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets. Federer advances to face James Blake.
Roger Federer ended a two-match losing streak to Juan Martin Del Potro on Tuesday night, prevailing 6-3, 7-5 in the second round of the Western & Southern Open. Federer fired 12 aces against just one double-fault and held all 11 of his service games to set up a showdown against James Blake.
The world No. 3 took control in the fourth game of the match, although not without a struggle. Del Potro earned a total of four game points serving at 1-2, but Federer capitalized on his first break point by forcing an error with a penetrating backhand. Federer dropped only one point in his next three service games as he closed out the opening frame of play with ease.
Del Potro could have gone away quietly in the second, but he saved a host of break points to stay within striking distance. The 19th-ranked Argentine fought off five break points in the opening game and one more at 4-4.
At 5-5, however, Federer finally converted with a perfect cross-court forehand. Cincinnati's No. 3 seed and defending champion then shut the door with a routine hold, clinching his first match point when a Del Potro forehand found the net.
"It went better than I thought," commented Federer, who served at an impressive 75 percent. "I played a wonderful first set and a very good second set, too."
Said Del Potro of Federer: "He played like No. 1 in the world."

Like Fed struggles against Nadal,so does Nadal against Novak these days.
So maybe a Fed,Novak final can be a bit more entertaining?

I don't like speaking of finals before the guy's reach them as a matter of fact. But The Djokerer will certainly have more at stake the a final Rafa Nole. We all know the outcome of that one. I'd like a Fedal anytime but I doubt it if Fed is in Djokers half Rafa goes the distance. So a Rafa Nole would also not be on the card.
We need to get a full circle and Fed has a chance in opstaging Djoker at a second slam therefor in his best year that would mean a big deal for Fed.
Of course he almost would be #2 if that happenend or he might be #2.
So much at stake this US Open and even more with a Djokerer final;-) Novak of course has to win in order to lay real claim on the crown. And have a first TMF year.
Albeit not reaching all four slamfinals like Fed TMF year 2006! Of course there is much at stake and it is a very big point RINTB!

Well a Murray vs Nole semifinal may see Murray beating Nole to reach his second USO final. Murray's game, when it's on, can trouble Nole too, so it's also not easy for Nole to win the USO. I only hope that Murray won't lose early at the USO so that we may have another chance of all the top four guys reaching the slam semis, like the FO this year. It will balance things up nicely for the USO, especially with the Super Saturday. Nole/Murray and Rafa/Fed, or Nole/Fed and Rafa/Murray, I see no advantage or disadvantage to any player involved
and that should make for some nice SF tennis matches.

luckystar, Fed never seems to face Rafa or Murray in semis in grand slams. It seems significant when you consider that he has an adverse h2h against both.
Clearly Fed and his backers at ATP/ grand slams see advantage in the Fed/Djoko match-up vs Fed/ Rafa or in the past Fed/Murray.

Would love to see Murray beat Nole but more importantly Rafa beating Nole, but to be honest neither look that confident to do so at the moment, only Fed can stop the determined Serb? mmm Roger!

No offence to Nadal, Murray or Tsonga who is a topcontender thes days, but that is just what is needed to top the year off.
