Roger Federer makes short work of James Blake on Thursday in Cincinnati on Thursday. Next up for the defending champion is a quarterfinal showdown with Tomas Berdych.
Roger Federer wasted no time in cruising past James Blake 6-4, 6-1 during third-round action at the Western & Southern Open on Thursday night. After a mere 54 minutes of play, Federer set up a quarterfinal clash against Tomas Berdych.
This one was a no-contest right from the start, as Federer broke serve in the opening game of the match. The third-ranked Swiss never came close to giving it back, surrendering a mere three points in five service games. Federer squandered three break points in the third game, but it mattered little because he held the entire way and wrapped up the set with ease at 5-4.
Blake fought off three break points to begin the second, but he failed to hold a three-deuce game and Federer converted his fourth chance when Blake struck an errant backhand. The 31-year-old American battled back well to break for 1-1, but his opponent quickly restored order to the proceedings. Federer ran off five straight games en route to victory, a streak that included three straight breaks. The No. 3 seed's fifth break of the day sent him through in style.
Federer served at only 54 percent, but he fired four aces and won 82 percent of his first-serve points. Blake, now 1-10 lifetime against Federer, recorded four aces while double-faulting five times.
