Blake advances, Del Potro to face Federer
8/15/11 4:15 AM | Ricky Dimon
James Blake reaches the Cincinnati second round with an opening-day win over Marcos Baghdatis. Juan Martin Del Potro also advances and is now set for a showdown against Roger Federer.
Juan Martin Del Potro d. Andreas Seppi 4-1, retired
It did not take long for a marquee second-round matchup to come to fruition at the Western & Southern Open. Del Potro advanced past Seppi after a mere 26 minutes on Sunday afternoon when the Italian retired in the first set due to a right foot injury. Next up for Del Potro, just barely unseeded in Cincinnati, is a premature clash with Roger Federer.
The 19th-ranked Argentine took control early and often against Seppi, racing to a 4-0 advantage. Seppi called for an injury timeout at that point but came back out and finally held serve. Nonetheless, he called it quits after getting on the scoreboard and sent Del Potro into the second round.
(WC) James Blake d. Marcos Baghdatis 3-6, 6-3, 6-2
Blake may not be in the midst of a full-fledged resurgence, but he continued his solid summer play with a victory over Baghdatis in the Cincinnati opening round on Sunday night. The veteran American, who had succumbed to Baghdatis in five sets at Wimbledon, overcame a first-set blemish and prevailed after one hour and 48 minutes of play. Blake awaits either Viktor Troicki or Fabio Fognini in round two.
Baghdatis showed signs of emerging from his current slump by holding all five of his service games in the first set to consolidate a lone break. Success was short-lived, however, for the 40th-ranked Cypriot. Blake earned his first break of the day in set two, closed it out on serve at 5-3, then raced away with the third thanks to a pair of breaks. The world No. 84 wrapped up his effort with three aces and one double-fault.
