Gilles Simon outlasts Jurgen Melzer late in the third set on Tuesday in Cincinnati. Simon is through to a second-round encounter with Janko Tipsarevic.
Gilles Simon battled back from a set down to defeat Jurgen Melzer 6-7(3), 6-3, 7-5 in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday afternoon. Simon needed two hours and 20 minutes to set up a marquee matchup against Montreal semifinalist Janko Tipsarevic.
This one was competitive right from the start, as the first set featured no breaks of serve. Simon did not even face a single break point in the entire set, but he cracked in the tiebreaker. Melzer pocketed an early mini-break and from there raced away from his opponent, rolling through it seven points to three.
Simon was quick to turn the tide in set two. The 12th-ranked Frenchman stormed ahead by two breaks, and he would need both because he dropped serve when he had the chance to close it out. Nonetheless, Simon recovered and ended the second set in style with his third break of the day.
A frustrated Melzer managed to get back on track in the decisive set. The 18th-ranked Austrian fought off four break points--including a match point at 4-5--to keep his hopes alive, but he finally buckled under the pressure at 5-6. Melzer led 30-15 in the final game of the match, but Simon took the last three points--including the clinching one with perfectly-angled backhand cross-court pass.
Simon finished with 10 aces and four double-faults while Melzer recorded seven aces and doubled three times.
