Tomas Berdych takes care of Juan Monaco in straight sets on Tuesday in Cincinnati. Berdych awaits either Ivo Karlovic or Nicolas Almagro in the third round.
Tomas Berdych improved to 5-0 lifetime against Juan Monaco with a 7-6(2), 6-0 victory in the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday. Berdych recovered from a break deficit in the first set then raced away with the match to advance after one hour and 36 minutes of play.
Monaco, fresh off a win over Tommy Haas on Monday, came out fast and seized his only break of the day at 1-1. Berdych, however, fought back and recovered the break at 2-3. Both players held from there en route to a tiebreaker and the rest of the way it was all Berdych. The ninth-ranked Czech dominated the 'breaker seven points to two, clinching with a service winner that forced Monaco into a return error.
Despite a decent showing in set one, Monaco disappeared in the second. The 39th-ranked Argentine did not win a single game and he won a mere two points in three return games. Berdych converted three of eight break chances then wrapped up the proceedings with a routine hold at 5-0.
Montreal's No. 8 seed recorded nine aces and two double-faults. He awaits either Ivo Karlovic or Nicolas Almagro for third-round action on Thursday.
