Jo-Wilfried Tsonga gets his Cincinnati campaign off to a good start on Tuesday, dismissing Marin Cilic in straight sets. Tsonga sets up a second-round meeting with Alex Bogomolov.
So much for an injured right forearm.
Three days after retiring against Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the Rogers Cup, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga hammered Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday afternoon. Tsonga dropped only six service points in the entire match and advanced after one hour and 18 minutes of play.
The Frenchman took control right from the start by seizing the first break of the day at 4-3 in the opening set. Cilic held a pair of game points at 40-30 and ad-in, but Tsonga fought back and Cilic eventually netted a backhand on break point. A routine hold for Tsonga, punctuated with his fifth ace, ended the set.
Cilic completely lost the plot when he donated serve at 1-1 in the second. Tsonga blistered a forehand return on break point and forced his opponent into an error and from there it was all over. The unseeded Croat took care of his the rest of his service games, but he never came close to breaking back. Tsonga wrapped up the proceedings in appropriate fashion, with a love game at 5-4.
"I felt really good," said Tsonga, who recorded nine aces and one double-fault en route to a matchup against Alex Bogomolov. "It was really a fluid match. Everything was easy for me today."
