Alex Bogomolov pulls off a second-round upset of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday in Cincinnati. Nicolas Almagro also advances by outlasting Ivo Karlovic in a third-set tiebreaker.
(Q) Alex Bogomolov d. (15) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 6-4
Bogomolov continued his breakout season on tour with a straight-set upset win over Tsonga on Wednesday afternoon at the Western & Southern Open. The 28-year-old American did not face a single break point the entire way and advanced to a third-round clash against Andy Murray after one hour and 12 minutes.
One break in each set proved to be enough for Bogomolov, as Tsonga's undoing was a failure to win second-serve points or baseline points as a whole. The 15th-seeded Frenchman won only 38 percent of his second-serve points in the first set and that number climbed to a mere 44 percent in the second. A clinching hold at 5-4 in set two sent Bogomolov safely though to another crack at Murray, whom he defeated earlier this year in Miami.
(9) Nicolas Almagro d. Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 5-7, 7-6(2)
Almagro outlasted Karlovic in a third-set tiebreaker on Wednesday afternoon in Cincinnati, advancing after one hour and 59 minutes. The Spaniard appeared to be on his way to routine victory during the first set, but it proved to be nothing of the sort. Almagro lost only one point in his first five service games and won 10 of 13 second-serve return points during a dominant opening frame of play.
Karlovic picked up the pace in set two, especially late. The 6'10'' Croat fought off four break points then seized his first break of the day when it mattered most--at 6-5. That allowed Karlovic to start the final set with serve, but Almagro did well to play from behind and stay alive the entire way. Neither man faced a single break point en route to a decisive tiebreaker, which the No. 9 seed dominated seven points to two. Almagro's first mini-break came with a winning pass off the net cord, and from there it was all over for Karlovic.
