Gilles Simon recovers from a set and a break down to beat Janko Tipsarevic on Wednesday in Cincinnati. Simon is through to a third-round clash against David Ferrer.
Gilles Simon booked a spot in the third round of the Western & Southern Open by defeating Janko Tipsarevic 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday night. Simon needed two hours and 43 minutes to set up a showdown against No. 5 seed David Ferrer.
This one was all about comebacks for Simon, and he almost staged one in the first set. The Frenchman donated serve then broke back immediately, eventually forcing a tiebreaker. Tipsarevic, however, raced through the decider seven points to three as errors began to creep into his opponent's game.
With momentum in hand, Tipsarevic stormed ahead 2-0 in the second set. Just as he did in set one, though, the 20th-ranked Serb gave it back immediately and Simon never looked back. Simon ended up earning three breaks in the second while taking advantage of dismal serving from Tipsarevic. Cincinnati's No. 10 seed forced a third set in style with a break at 5-3.
Tipsarevic could not recover in the third, as he won a mere two points in four return games. One break--which Simon seized right away--would have been enough for the world No. 12, but he added one more in the final game of the match to advance.
Simon wrapped up his effort with six aces and three double-faults while serving at just 48 percent. Tipsarevic, a semifinalist last week in Montreal, recorded four aces and five doubles.
