Wawrinka, Gulbis both upset in Cincy opener
8/17/11 4:06 AM | Cheryl Murray
Ernests Gulbis fell victim to Ivan Dodig, who also took out Rafael Nadal in Montreal and Stanislas Wawrinka was upset by Andrey Golubev.
Ivan Dodig def. Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 7-6(3)
Ernests Gulbis had his Cincinnati bid cut short. The Latvian went from winning the event in LA to a third round ouster in Montreal to this first round loss.
Croatia’s Ivan Dodig got the win of his life last week in Montreal, with a second round win over Rafael Nadal. Dodig came into Cincinnati with confidence. He didn’t serve as well in this match as he did in his win over Nadal, but even 49% first serve percentage was enough to get the straight-set victory.
Dodig will take on Gael Monfils in the second round.
Andrey Golubev def. Stanislas Wawrinka 3-6, 6-4, 6-1
Switzerland’s No. 2 player Stanislas Wawrinka lost a one set lead and put in a dreadful performance in the third set to drop out of the Cincinnati Masters.
The second set could have gone either way. Golubev broke first, but Wawrinka found a way to break back. The Swiss man’s serve started to let him down and Golubev’s return really started to do damage. Wawrinka only managed to win one game in the third set.
