Andy Murray cruises past Gilles Simon in straight sets on Friday in Cincinnati. Murray awaits either Rafael Nadal or Mardy Fish in the semifinals.
Andy Murray kept up his fine form at the Western & Southern Open with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Gilles Simon during quarterfinal action on Friday afternoon. Murray, who has not dropped a set this week, advanced after one hour and 35 minutes of play.
The fourth-ranked Scot donated his opening service game of the match following an initial break of his own, but that was his only real hiccup. Murray broke again for 3-2 and this time he made no mistake with lead in hand. In fact, Murray did not even have to serve it out the entire way because he added one more break at 5-3, clinching the set with a cruel drop-shot.
Simon had a chance to get back on track in the third game of set two, but his opponent fought off a break point with a big first serve. The 12th-ranked Frenchman, who had won all three of his matches this week in three sets, continued to wear down and was unable to provide further resistance. Murray broke for 3-1 with a drop-shot and later finished off the proceedings in appropriate fashion with yet another winning dropper at 5-3, 40-15.
The No. 4 seed fired eight aces and double-faulted twice en route to a showdown against either Rafael Nadal or Mardy Fish. Simon doomed his chances by serving at a mere 47 percent.
