World No. 4 Andy Murray advanced to the Western & Southern Open final, following his straight-set victory over World No. 7 Mardy Fish. The Scot will face World No. 1 Novak Djokovic for the title.
Fourth seed Andy Murray is through to the final, after taking out 7th seed Mardy Fish in straight sets Saturday afternoon. The 24-year-old tallied five aces and four service breaks, en route to a 6-3, 7-6(8) win in two hours and 19 minutes of play.
Murray broke to 3-1 in the opening set, the quickly reached set point at 5-3. After missing his first chance to close, the Scot capitalized on a second to 6-3. Both players survived a scratchy second set with three losses of serve apiece. Fish earned two set points at 6-5, but was unable to convert.
Murray fought back after twice trailing by a mini-break late in the set. Match points came at 6-5 and 8-7 for the Scot with no success. At 9-8, Murray finished the match on a forehand error from the American.
“I was struggling physically early on in the second set, I need to get that better before the US Open,” Murray explained.. “I need to get stronger; I haven’t played many matches in the past few weeks and this was the first tough one. I maybe need another one hour and 40 minutes of endurance in me before the US Open.”
Murray is slated to face World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s final. Djokovic earned passage into the final by virtue of opponent Tomas Berdych’s retirement.
