  • Simon overcomes Kubot in Bucharest quarterfinals

    4/27/12 4:01 PM | Ricky Dimon
Gilles Simon is through to the Bucharest semifinals after ousting Lukasz Kubot in three sets on Friday. Simon will battle Matthias Bachinger for a spot in the title match.

Gilles Simon came back from a set deficit to beat Lukasz Kubot 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Friday afternoon. Simon saved eight of 11 break points and converted six of his 15 opportunities to advance in two hours and 13 minutes.

Playing the role of a considerable underdog, Kubot stormed out of the gates playing nothing-to-lose tennis. Thanks to aggressive tactics, he held serve the entire way in the first set while fighting off four break points. One break of his own allowed allowed Kubot to serve it out at 5-3.

Simon, a two-time champion in Bucharest, turned the tide decisively in set two. The top-seeded Frenchman donated serve one more time, but he started to completely dominate in the return game. A big reason was Kubot serving at a mere 41 percent, but Simon won more than half of the points even when his opponent put in first serves.

After finishing off the second on serve, Simon broke immediately in the decider courtesy of a Kubot double-fault. The world No. 12 eventually failed to serve out the match at 5-2, but it mattered little. Kubot again double-faulted on break point--this time on a match point at 3-5--to end the proceedings.

The 51st-ranked Pole wrapped up his effort with two aces and six doubles. Simon finished with three aces and two double-faults as he set up a semifinal clash against Matthias Bachinger.
