  • Simon opens in Bucharest with win over Sela

    4/26/12 7:39 PM | Ricky Dimon
Gilles Simon kicks off his bid for a third career Bucharest title by defeating Dudi Sela in straight sets on Thursday. Simon will go up against Lukasz Kubot in the quarterfinals.

Gilles Simon took care of Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy on Thursday evening. Simon needed one hour and 21 minutes to win his tournament opener and book a spot in the quarterfinals.

It was Sela, however, who got off to a strong start. The 63rd-ranked Israeli earned the first break of the day for a 3-1 advantage in the opening set. But the success was short-lived because Sela donated his next service game to bring Simon back on level terms. Simon broke again at 4-4 then served out the set one game later, capitalizing on his second set point at 40-30.

The top-seeded Frenchman took complete control when Sela sent a forehand just past the baseline on break point in the first game of the second. It was all over from there for Sela, who dropped serve again at 2-4 when Simon cracked a blistering forehand return.

Simon endured a bit of a struggle closing out the proceedings as his opponent continued to fight with some impressive baseline play. After three squandered match points, though, the two-time champion converted his fourth chance with a big first serve.

Simon finished with one ace and no double-faults while taking advantage of four of six break-point opportunities. He will take on Lukasz Kubot for a spot in the semifinals.
