  • Andujar advances to the quarterfinals in Belgrade

    5/4/12 3:32 AM | Cheryl Murray
Spaniard Pablo Andujar was pushed to three sets, but the tournament No. 1 seed managed to get past Filippo Volandri to move into the quarters, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

For the first set and most of the second, this match looked like an upset in the making. Filippo Volandri took command of the match from the beginning, taking the opening set after breaking Andujar twice.

Most of the drama came in the second set. The Italian, who is ranked 73 in the world, went up a break and had a 4-2 lead over the top seed. Volandri lost the lead. Andujar let Volandri get a look on his serve again in the tenth game of the set, but he was able to stave off the break.

The set-winning break came for Andujar at 5-5, which seemed to take the air out of the Italian’s sails. Volandri had difficulty on serve in the decider, giving up a pair of breaks en route to the 3-set victory.

Andujar will take on Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in the quarters.
