  • Harrison and Fognini lose early in Belgrade

    5/2/12 3:00 AM | Cheryl Murray
It was a tough day for the seeds at the Serbia Open. No. 6 seed Fabio Fognini and No. 7 seed Ryan Harrison were both sent packing in the opening round.

Benoit Paire def. Fabio Fognini (6) 6-1, 6-4

After a fantastic showing in Bucharest last week, where he made the final, Italy’s Fabio Fognini exited Belgrade in the first round. The Italian was struggling with injury throughout the match. He did well to take the early lead in the second set, but after the push to secure a break of serve from Benoit Paire in his first service game, he once again ran out of steam. Paire allowed him just one more game after that.

The Frenchman, who is ranked 96 in the world, will move into the second round where he will take on Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain.

Joao Souza def. Ryan Harrison (7) 6-3, 6-3

American Ryan Harrison will have to wait for his first big breakthrough on European clay. The No. 7 seed, after suffering a nightmare with flight cancellations and lost luggage en route to Belgrade, was ousted in straight sets at the hands of Joao Souza of Brazil.

Harrison was caught playing defensive tennis and spent too much time behind the baseline. Souza was able to take advantage of some ill-timed errors from the American and secured a trio of break points to advance.

Souza will face Serbian wildcard Dusan Lajovic.
