  • Nalbandian gets off to winning start in Belgrade

    5/3/12 4:04 AM | Cheryl Murray
Argentine David Nalbandian booked a spot in the quarterfinals with a straight-set win over Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene.

    David Nalbandian (4) def. Aljaz Bedene (Q) 6-4, 6-3

This was not a poorly played match from qualifier Aljaz Bedene. The Slovenian didn’t have quite enough power to hang with Nalbandian from the baseline, but he didn’t donate a host of errors to the Argentine’s cause either.

Nalbandian was solid on serve in the first set. The No. 4 seed didn’t face any break points and secured one to take the lead. He had a little bit of a mental let-down part-way through the second set, however. Bedene captured a break of serve, but it wasn’t enough to push a third set. Nalbandian snagged three breaks of serve in the second to win in straight sets.

Andreas Seppi (2) def. Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-2

No. 2 seed Andreas Seppi advanced to the quarterfinals in straight sets over Croat Ivan Dodig. The Italian gave up a pair of service breaks, one in each set but Dodig couldn’t hold onto his own serve long enough to take advantage.

Dodig dropped serve five times in the set during a loss perhaps due to his lengthy first-round match against Adrian Unger, which he won 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-4.

Seppi will take on Gilles Muller in the quarters.
