Veteran Ivan Ljubicic reached the round of 16 after taking out lucky loser Teymuraz Gabashvili, who took the place of injured 7th seed John Isner. Fourth seed Nicolas Almagro was upset by former finalist Mikhail Youzhny.

Former China Open runner-up Mikhail Youzhny is through to the second round following his straight-set success against 4th seed Nicolas Almagro. The Russian veteran secured five of 10 break points, through to a 6-3, 6-2 victory in just 69 minutes. Almagro struggled with his second serve, having won seven of 31 points.
Youzhny will face Feliciano Lopez for a place in the quarterfinals. The Spaniard took out qualifier Marsel Ilhan in the first round.
Ivan Ljubicic def. (LL) Teymuraz Gabashvili 7-5, 7-5
Former World No. 3 Ivan Ljubicic won his opener against lucky loser Teymuraz Gabashvili in straight sets. The veteran was initially supposed to take on 7th seed John Isner, but the American pulled out with an abdominal strain.
Ljubicic tallied 14 aces and five service breaks en route to a 7-5, 7-5 victory in 98 minutes. He is slated to battle Florian Mayer in the next round.

Isner out of Beijing AND Shanghai due to illness
not sure how reports of an ab strain got out. Saw those reports in multiple places. But it's illness.
