  • Nishikori beats Berdych, Fish retires

    11/1/11 11:30 PM | Kelli DeMario
Wildcard Kei Nishikori made a successful start to the tournament, having rallied to upset 4th seed Tomas Berdych late Tuesday. He is joined in round two by James Blake, who moved on after Mardy Fish retired with injury.

(WC) Kei Nishikori def. (4) Tomas Berdych 3-6, 6-3, 6-2

World No. 32 Kei Nishikori advanced to the round of 16 following his three-set victory over 4th seed Tomas Berdych. After splitting the first two sets, the 21-year-old broke to 2-1 and 4-1 in the final set. Nishikori ended the night with 33 of 40 first-service points captured through two hours and four minutes.

He is scheduled to take on Andreas Seppi in the next round. The Italian defeated Gilles Muller in the first round, 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-2.

    (Q) James Blake def. (5) Mardy Fish 0-1 (retired)

Qualifier James Blake is through to the second round after 5th seed Mardy Fish pulled out with injury. The countrymen had completed one game, when Fish called it a day with a left hamstring injury.

Blake will move on to face lucky loser Mikhail Kukushkin for a spot in the quarterfinals. Kukushkin defeated wildcard Donald Young in the first round, 6-4, 6-2.

Comments

I watched most of the Nishikori/Berdych match. I was surprised when I checked back to see Nishikori up a break in that third set. Didn't see this one coming.

Too bad about Fish. He really hasn't seemed to be himself of late. He didn't look good in the Asian swing and now to have to retire with a hamstring injury after doing so well this year. Too bad.

Both Fish and Berdych must be bitterly disappointed and will need to put up a v.good showing in Paris if they are to hang on to their WTF places.

wrong. they have basically already clinched.

Don't need anything in Paris.

Thanks for the reassurance Ricky. I have never been able to master the art of calculating the odds for ranking points.

Djokovic's draw just got a lot more easy and it was the easiest quarter to begin with.
Judging from the first match Djokovic will welcome this like the shade when he played against troicki last year at the US Open.
