Hometown man Stanislas Wawrinka advanced in straight sets over Ivan Dodig, while Nieminen battled for 3 against Thomaz Bellucci.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Ivan Dodig 6-4, 6-4
Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka had no difficulty getting past Croatia’s Ivan Dodig on Tuesday. The Swiss man faced just one break point for the entire match and he only dropped 13 points on serve.
Dodig simply couldn’t keep up. The Croat surrendered a service break in each set and he did himself no favors by serving at 45%. The win sends Wawrinka into the second round where he awaits the winner of Andy Murray and Robin Haase.
Jarkko Nieminen def. Thomaz Bellucci 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-3
Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen once against displayed why indoor hard courts are his best surface. The Finn took out Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci in 3 tough sets. Nieminen came into Basel off a recent showing in the finals of Stockholm. And with today’s win, he’ll have a shot at hometown hero Roger Federer.
The last two sets of this first round match were not as one-sided as the scoreline makes it appear. Bellucci didn’t have any break point chances in the middle frame, but the Brazilian had a pair of them in the third set; he just couldn’t convert as Nieminen battled his way out of trouble.
