Roddick, Wawrinka fight through to quarterfinals
11/4/11 3:53 AM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Roddick and Stanislas Wawrinka got through their second round matches on Thursday, but not before dropping a set each.
Andy Roddick (7) def. Radek Stepanek 2-6, 6-3, 6-3
Radek Stepanek played some excellent tennis in the opening set of his second round match against Andy Roddick. The Czech’s highly aggressive game worked to its best advantage. Unfortunately for Stepanek, Roddick found his serve in a big way. The American veteran faced no break points and won a surprising 8 of 9 points on second serve.
Stepanek wasn’t able to keep up with Roddick in the decider. The Czech dropped serve once, and again at 5-3, where he lost 5 consecutive points to lose the match. Roddick moves into the quarters where he will face familiar foe Roger Federer.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Robin Haase 4-6, 6-1, 6-2
Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka might have gotten off to a shaky start against the big-serving Dutchman Robin Haase, but he quickly turned that around in the second set. With the crowd behind him, Wawrinka completely demolished Haase in the last two frames.
The Dutchman faced 12 break points in sets 2 and 3, with Wawrinka holding Haase to just 3 games. He will take on the surging German Florian Mayer in the quarters.
