World No. 4 Roger Federer shook off the rust of a 6 week layoff with a straight set win over Italy’s Potito Starace.
Roger Federer was made to work a bit harder than the fans in Basel perhaps expected, but the victory was still in straight sets.
Federer was playing with the rust that comes from the 6-week break he took since playing Davis Cup in September against Australia. Still, opponent Potito Starace was in better form than he’s shown in their other 5 meetings against the Swiss man.
Perhaps the shock of the match was the Federer was out-aced by 7 to 4 by Starace. The Italian actually had the only break point of the first set, but he was unable to convert it. Federer, as usual, was solid in the tiebreaker to take the lead.
One break of serve in the second set was enough to send the Italian packing and Federer into the second round where he awaits the winner of Jarkko Nieminen and Thomaz Bellucci.

Bleck - it was really just the rust. Roger took a lot of time off and his movement and timing isn't quite clicking yet. I expect that it will as the week progresses.

Of late most commentators want fed to get back to his winning ways and that has not happened for a very long time and suddenly even the most vocal critics want him to win some. The fact of the matter is he is losing matches that will remain as the greatest of matches in tennis history and that is the moot point, greats only can beat arguably the best.

Well done Federer! As Cheryl said, just rustiness after 6 weeks rest. I expect a recovery over the next few days.
It's so happy times to see Federer back again. Such a drought for tennis fans of the greatest. Welcome back Rogie!

I was able to see almost the entire macth and for a first match after a long break anything more than straight sets would be too much to ask.
Federer had a bit of trouble with his serve amassing 5 or so DF and Starace served really well, 7 aces, so it was hard for Roger to get into his serve games.
Roger also seemed a bit slow but his game should improve as the tournament goes by.
