World No. 1 Novak Djokvovic survived a difficult first round at the Swiss Indoors Basel, having held on to defeat veteran Xavier Malisse. The top seed came through the match in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won his first match in nearly six weeks following his hard-fought victory against Belgian veteran Xavier Malisse. The 24-year-old tallied eight aces and seven double faults through two hours and 13 minutes of play.
After splitting the first two sets, Djokovic built a 3-0 advantage in the final set. He looked to close the match at 5-3 but gifted a costly double-fault to Malisse. Djokovic held another match point in the 12th game, as the Belgian sprayed unforced errors. A final forehand miss from Malisse completed the contest.
Djokovic ended the day with four of 10 break points converted.
He will take on either Tobias Kamke or Lukasz Kubot in the next round. The two qualifiers are slated to battle on Wednesday.
