Baghdatis takes out Troicki in Basel opener

Former World No. 8 Marcos Baghdatis is through to the second round, having ousted tournament seed Viktor Troicki. Lucky loser Mikhail Kukushkin also advanced, following his straight-set victory over wildcard Donald Young.

Marcos Baghdatis reached round two after rallying to upend 8th seed Viktor Troicki in three sets. The Cypriot converted five of seven break points, en route to a 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-2 victory in two hours and 43 minutes. He completed the successful effort with six aces and 43 of 60 first-service points captured. Troicki ended the day with four double faults and just 39% of his first serves made.
Baghdatis will take on either Mikhail Youzhny or qualifier Michael Lammer for a place in the quarterfinal.

Mikhail Kukushkin is through to the second round after taking out wildcard Donald Young late Monday. The 23-year-old was a last-minute replacement for Jurgen Melzer, who pulled out of Basel with back pain.
Kukushkin collected six breaks of serve, through to a 6-4, 6-2 win in 87 minutes.
He is slated to face either 5th seed Mardy Fish or qualifier James Blake in the next round.
