After going 0-22, Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen finally took a set from Basel hometown favorite Roger Federer.
Until the third match, this match did not offer particularly good quality tennis. In the opening set, world No. 4 Roger Federer completely dismantled Nieminen’s game. The Finn went 0 for 3 in break points saved and Federer spent the frame bullying Nieminen around the back of the court.
The Swiss man seemed to have a lapse of concentration in the second set. Nieminen came out of the gates to break serve not once, but twice before Federer righted the ship.
Federer got one of the service breaks back, but sloppy play from the world No. 4 allowed Nieminen to pull through a nervy game at 5-4 to serve the set out.
To the delight of the crowd, Federer responded in the third set with a break of Nieminen’s serve. The set appeared for a time as though it was going to be a mirror image of the first, with Federer holding the Finn to a single game, but Nieminen held to force Federer to serve it out at 5-3. Nieminen actually had a chance to get the set back on serve, but Federer served his way out of trouble.
Federer advances to the quarterfinals while potential opponents Radek Stepanek and either Tommy Haas or Andy Roddick have yet to contest their second round matches.
