  • Raonic sends Murray packing in Barcelona

    4/27/12 3:24 PM | Cheryl Murray
No. 2 seed Andy Murray suffered an upset at the hands of No. 11 Milos Raonic. The loss was Murray’s second quarterfinal exit in a row.

Milos Raonic is quickly proving that red clay is not his enemy. The No. 11 seed looked comfortable throughout most of this quarterfinal match with the world No. 4 Andy Murray.

In the first set in particular, Raonic dominated play. The Canadian, with his huge first serve held with ease, not facing a single break point. But it was Raonic’s ground game that caused the real problems for Murray. The Scot was forced to play defensive tennis, simply reacting to whatever Raonic threw at him.

Raonic secured the only break of serve and held onto it easily to take the one-set lead.

Murray lifted his level a bit in the second set and Raonic’s dropped, which made it a more competitive affair. Still, Murray threw in a shaky service game at 4-4 and gave Raonic the opportunity to serve out the match.

At 5-4, Raonic took his turn at wobbly tennis. He missed the first two points of the game on shanked overheads and some more aggressive groundstrokes from Murray earned him the break back and the chance to play on.

As it turned out, the success was short-lived for Murray. The tiebreaker was another strong statement by Raonic, who went back to first-set gameplan of stepping in and dictating play.

Raonic awaits the winner of David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez in the semifinals.

Didnt get to see the match due to work. Looked as if Andys serve let him down?

Raonic played a solid match, but what impressed me most was his the commentators said, he had a wobble as he was serving for a match but he quickly regrouped, impressive considering who he was playing and serving for the match..............not bad for a young man.

Where did AndyMs game wrong?

off all the big serving dudes, this kid is gonna be the real trouble maker. He can end it against anhone anytime anyplace. I loved to see him inthe final. I dont want him to be placed in feds quarter at wimbly. but these guys maybe even more dangerous on clay.

Normally this would be big shock, but given the way that Murray has been playing it's really not. He didn't look good at MC, wasn't serving well and his game overall is just not where it should be.

Someone like Raonic is dangerous with his big serves and groundstrokes. He's also mentally tough for a young kid. He's got the game to give a top player trouble if they are not on their game.

Cool! :) Very cool! Raonic is not just a big server that's for sure. I'd like see him beat Ferrer. Let's see what he can do or does next. Go Milos!

Why would a Fed fan want Milos to win against Ferrer? Hmm. Interesting.

It seems to me that Murray's clay court game has gone backwards, when we compare his current game with his last year's on clay. Last year, he played more aggressively and even took a set off Rafa at MC. To me, Murray's problem on clay is still his movement; shots where he normally could get to on other surfaces, he wasn't quick enough to get to on clay. It happened during his match with Berdych at MC, it happened now at Barcelona. I believe on the hard courts, Murray may beat this Raonic in three. Murray normally doesn't have any problem with the big serve big hitting guys on hard and grass, it's the clay surface that neutralize his strength, ie his incredible retrieving skills.

Is Lendl going to walk?

nadline , 4/28/12 9:26 AM

NNY and Luckystar both of your comments (as always) were interesting and informative.

Nadine, I haven`t heard/read anything. AndyM did say it could be six months or so before there were any benifits/changes to his game, the six months are all but gone.
