  • Lopez puts a fight, but Ferrer into Barca semis

    4/27/12 5:52 PM | Cheryl Murray
David Ferrer fought off three match points in the second set to advance to the Saturday’s Barcelona Open semifinal against Milos Raonic.

This was easily the match of the tournament thus far. Spaniards David Ferrer and Feliciano Lopez put on a fantastic show for their countrymen, with Ferrer finally snagging the 6-7(4), 7-6(7), 6-3 win with a single break in the third set.

Lopez was the better player through the first set and most of the second. Ferrer managed to keep the score close, but it was more his mental toughness than his actual shots that kept him in the match. The No. 7 seed served beautifully and did damage with his all-court game, coming into net often and with good success.

Lopez, who is the better server, used his best weapon to his advantage in the first-set 'breaker to snag the lead from his countryman.

Ferrer still wasn’t playing his best tennis through the second set. Both men continued to hold serve, as break-point chances for each came and went with nothing to show for the opportunities except for a pair of missed match points for Lopez at 5-4 in the second set.

Lopez once again got an early jump in the 'breaker, going up 4-1 before Ferrer made another of his signature comebacks to get back on serve. Lopez earned himself one last match point, at 7-6, but the 'breaker was back on serve at the time and a solid serve from Ferrer saw him out of trouble.

Ferrer finally grabbed the second set 9-7 in the 'breaker and went on to get the only break of the match in the third set for the match win. The Spaniard will take on Milos Raonic in the semifinals.
