  • Blake upsets Ferrer under the lights

    3/15/10 12:40 PM | Cheryl Murray
James Blake scored his first big win of the year with an upset victory over Spain’s David Ferrer in straight sets.

David Ferrer’s mind must still be on Davis Cup. Thanks in part to Ferrer’s strong play, Spain zipped past Switzerland in the first round last weekend. Unfortunately for Ferrer, he did not bring his winning ways with him to Indian Wells.

James Blake, however, apparently remembered how much he likes to play on hard courts. The world No. 52 was on fire in this match, his forehand completely dismantling Ferrer. Blake has fallen on hard times of late. The once-perennial top 10 player has been spiraling down the rankings for the past year, and he has not had a win over a top player since the start of the season.

All of that changed on Sunday night. The American looked like the Blake of old. Against one of the best returners in the game today, Blake did not face a single break point in the entire match.

Ferrer seemed unable to get the feel of the court especially in the first set. This was, perhaps, owing to the fact that he just came off a lengthy (and successful) clay court swing in South America and again last weekend in Davis Cup. The Spaniard was broken 3 times in the 1 hour match.

Blake will take on Nicolas Almagro in the round of 16.
