In an otherwise drama-filled day in Paris, Robin Soderling and Tommy Robredo quietly made their way into the third round.
Robin Soderling def. Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 7-6(6)
Sweden’s Robin Soderling had a more difficult time than the scoreline suggests in his second-round match against Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic. The Swede faced a whopping seven break points in the opening set, each of which he managed to fight off. The number is all the more surprising because Karlovic is not particularly known for his tough return game. For his part, Karlovic only faced one break point, but he surrendered it, thus giving the first set to Soderling.
The second set was more typical of a Karlovic match. The Croat sent eight aces past Soderling and was not challenged on serve to force a tiebreaker. Soderling, who is the far better baseliner, was able to secure a late mini-break to take the match in straight sets.
Tommy Robredo def. Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4
Spain’s Tommy Robredo won his match against Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic thanks to his outstanding mental toughness. Robredo faced five break points in the opening set, but he was able to weather each. Conversely, Berdych faced only one break point in the opening set and two in the second, but he managed to drop serve twice (once per set).
Robredo will take on fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the third round.
