  • Roddick beats Simon, qualifies for Shanghai

Andy Roddick got a 2-for-1 deal on Thursday when he took out 10th-seeded Gilles Simon. Not only is he into the quarterfinals, but he also clinches his sixth Masters Cup berth.

Every year since 2003, Andy Roddick has made the year-end Masters Cup event. He sealed it up this year by striking 15 aces and saving all four break points he faced against Gilles Simon.

Roddick seemed fired up for this match and was striking the ball with great authority. He was quite aggressive in his overall approach and Simon couldn't do much. The first set was all Roddick. The American looked invincible. Huge serves and deeply penetrating forehands were the story of the first set as Simon had no clue what to do. Roddick looked itchy to step up and take every ball he could extremely early, especially the Simon second serve.

After breaking the Frenchman twice, Roddick took the first set 6-3. In the second, Roddick seemed to cool off. Andy's serve was still rocking, but he hit a few double-faults and every time he struck a second serve, a long rally would ensue. In said long rallies, Roddick went back to the passive play that earned him some wretched results this year. He had to save four break points and his forehand was nowhere near as penetrating as it was in the opener. Late in the set, though, Roddick was able to break Simon as he stepped up his power game again. He took the second set and the match 7-5.
