Richard Gasquet defeats Kevin Anderson in straight sets on Tuesday in Paris. Gasquet is through to the third round and he sets up a likely showdown with Roger Federer.
Richard Gasquet improved to 3-0 lifetime--all in the past two seasons--over Kevin Anderson with a 6-4, 7-6(3) win in the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Tuesday night. Gasquet served dreadfully (49 percent, three aces, six double-faults) but had just enough to prevail after one hour and 52 minutes.
The Frenchman got off to a strong start by breaking in the third game of the match. Anderson had two chances to get back on serve, but both went by the wayside. A clutch hold for Gasquet at 5-4 ended the opening frame of play.
At the tail end of a tight second set, Gasquet seemed to be on the verge of victory. The No. 16 seed went on a streak in which he won 10 of 12 points, from serving at 4-5 down to serving at 6-5, 30-0. Two points from defeat, though, Anderson--out of nowhere--won four straight points for his first scalp of the Gasquet serve. A Gasquet double-fault on break point set up a tiebreaker.
Despite the disappointment, the world No. 20 seized an immediate mini-break and quickly raced to a 6-1 advantage. Anderson saved two match points on his own serve and another on return, but the 6'7'' South African could not claw all the way back. Gasquet forced his opponent into a forehand error with a big forehand of his own to clinch the win on his fourth chance.
Anderson struck 13 aces and only one double-fault while serving at 63 percent. Gasquet, meanwhile, awaits either world No. 4 Roger Federer or wild card Adrian Mannarino.
