  • Djokovic starts slow but rolls over Troicki

    11/10/11 2:37 PM | Ricky Dimon
Novak Djokovic drops the first set only to storm past Viktor Troicki and into the Paris quarterfinals on Thursday. Djokovic awaits a clash against either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Andreas Seppi.

Novak Djokovic overcame a slow start to defeat fellow Serb Viktor Troicki 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the third round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Thursday afternoon. Djokovic needed one hour and 56 minutes to set up a quarterfinal date with either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Andreas Seppi.

For a while it looked Djokovic did not have much interest battling through a minor shoulder issue that hampered him last week in Basel. The world No. 1 won a dismal two of 11 second-serve points in the opening set and was broken twice. Troicki fought off five of six break points before closing out the set on serve at 5-4.

With momentum in hand, Troicki had a chance to take complete control against his favored countryman early in the second. Paris' No. 15 seed just barely missed a break opportunity at 2-2 and the tide seemed to turn when Djokovic eventually held. In fact, Djokovic lost only two more games the entire rest of the way from that point, and just one more in the second. The top seed capitalized on both of his break points in set two and capitalized on dismal serving from his opponent before serving things out himself at 6-3.

From there it was all over for Troicki, who saw his level continue to dip in the third. The world No. 19 could not find the court with his first serve and could not win second-serve points, while Djokovic's return only got better and better. It ended in appropriate fashion with Troicki serving at 5-1, as the four-time Grand Slam champion pummeled backhand return after backhand return. One last big return at 30-40 forced Troicki to net a backhand volley.

Djokovic struck three aces and four double-faults while hitting 28 winners to a disappointing 44 unforced errors. Troicki recorded 19 winners 28 mistakes to go along with seven aces and three doubles. Djokovic improves to 10-1 lifetime against Troicki, including 9-1 on hard courts.
