Verdasco, Benneteau advance at Paris Masters
11/7/11 9:22 PM | Cheryl Murray
Julien Benneteau and Fernando Verdasco both pulled off upsets on the first day of play at the Paris Masters.
Julien Benneteau def. Milos Raonic 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-4
In this tough 2 and a half hour opener, Julien Benneteau upended Canadian Milos Raonic. Benneteau, who spends at least part of his year on the challenger circuit, made it through 3 sets without getting broken and facing just 1 break point.
Raonic served well in his own right. The Canadian struck 22 aces and staved off 2 of the 3 break points against him, but the one break point, which Benneteau converted in the third set lost the match for the world No. 29.
Fernando Verdasco def. Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-2, 6-3
After winning the first set, Marin Cilic allowed Fernando Verdasco to completely dictate play. The Croat served at 41% and 45% in the second and third sets and surrendered 3 breaks of serve.
After struggling this fall, Verdasco finally showed the kind of form that once had him ranked inside the top 10. The courts at the Paris Masters seem to be a bit slower than they’ve been in recent years, which can only help Verdasco as the tournament progresses.
Verdasco will take on No. 5 seed Tomas Berdych in the second round.
