  • Fish destroys Mayer, Troicki takes care of Stakhovsky

    11/9/11 8:28 PM | Ricky Dimon
Mardy Fish and Viktor Troicki are through to the third round in Paris after victories on Wednesday. They defeat Florian Mayer and Sergiy Stakhovsky, respectively.

    (7) Mardy Fish d. Florian Mayer 6-1, 6-2

Fish made a flawless start to his BNP Paribas Masters campaign, blasting Mayer in just 56 minutes on Wednesday evening. The ninth-ranked American earned two breaks in the first set and those were more than enough because he dropped a mere five points in four service games. Fish wrapped up the opening frame of play with his fourth ace.

Mayer donated serve to open the second and from there it was all over for the unseeded German. He won even fewer return points in set two--a total of three in four games. A final hold for Fish at 5-2 ended the proceedings and sent him through to the third round. Paris' No. 7 seed awaits either Gilles Simon or Juan Monaco.

    (15) Viktor Troicki d. (Q) Sergiy Stakhovsky vs. 6-4, 6-4

Troicki made this much closer than it could have been, but he managed to get the job done after one hour and 27 minutes. The world No. 19 led 2-0 in the first set and had a break point for 3-0 only to soon find himself serving at 2-3 and facing a break point. Troicki managed to hold, added one more break of his own, and came up with a clutch hold at 5-4 to pocket the set.

Stakhovsky also fought well in the second, but again it was not enough. The 63rd-ranked Ukrainian survived triple match point at 2-5 to earn a stunning break and he showed signs of doing the same at 4-5 after holding his own serve. Troicki again had 40-0 and finally converted a match point at 40-30 to advance. Next up for the Serb is countryman and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic.
