Roger Federer eases past Juan Monaco in the Paris quarterfinals on Friday evening. Federer sets up a showdown with Tomas Berdych.
Injuries, absences, and upsets have been part of the story at the BNP Paribas Masters. Roger Federer, though, is in cruise control and he booked his spot in the semifinals with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Juan Monaco on Friday.
Federer played one bad service game but otherwise dominated the first set. After shanking a backhand to get broken at 1-1, the world No. 4 woke up. He won the last five games of the set to erase a 3-1 deficit, watching Monaco give away breaks with a netted backhand in the sixth game and a double-fault in the eighth game. Federer was extended to deuce at 5-3, but he converted his second set point when his opponent dumped a backhand in the net.
Monaco did not go away quietly in the second. In fact, the 34th-ranked Argentine faced no break points en route to 5-5 and even found himself two points from the set on four occasions with Federer serving at 4-5. Monaco, though, could not get over the hump and he cracked with the pressure on at 5-5. Federer broke then held easily, capitalizing on his first match point with his seventh ace.
Federer advanced after one hour and 24 minutes to cement his position as the only one of the top four players in the world to reach the semis. Rafael Nadal did not play, Novak Djokovic gave Jo-Wilfried Tsonga a quarterfinal walkover, and Andy Murray lost to Tomas Berdych 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
Federer, who scored his 800th ATP match win for seventh place on the all-time open era list, will face Berdych on Saturday for a place in the title match.

I saw the replay of this match and Fed didn't look that great. Monaco had chances and couldn't take advantage of them. I am trying to remember the stats from memory, I think Fed won only 42% of second serve points and 82% of first serve points. He got about 63% of first serves in, which is okay. But I believe it was something like 25 winners to 35 UE's. Not great.
Fed did what he had to do to win. It was enough for Monaco. He will have to play better against Berdy.

Strange how these things rarely live up to the hype. So the last two tournaments Roger was supposed to have to go through Murray and Nole and it didn't happen in either.
Nonetheless, Berdych has beaten him as recently as Cincy and we know Jo can be trouble so Roger still has a lot of work yet to be done.

I just finished watching Berdy beat Murray. If Berdy can bring this quality of tennis in his semifinal match with Fed, then who knows what may happen. I do expect Fed to lift his game, becaue he has to know that if Berdy is on his game then he will have to play much better than he did against the likes of Monaco.

Far be it of me to talk Federer up, but I thought he was on top of the match yesterday. Monaco did his best but I thought Roger was too good.
No I haven't got sand in my brain and I actually enjoyed the match because Monaco
did not present Roger with a win even though Federer seemed to have it in the bag
from the start he still had to work at it which is how it should be. He'll have to work harder against Berdy and there is no clear winner there.
I just can't wait to see my man on court again.

I think Fed played well enough to win. I posted some stats from the match and I thought they were interesting. It was not Fed at his best, not with more UE's than winners. Also, winning only 42% of second serve points isn't great. He did win 82% of first serve points and that shows how important that first serve is to him.
I never felt that Monaco had a chance to beat Fed. He did well to hang with him in that second set, even having a chance at 5-4 to break Fed. But Fed stayed strong in a long game and held his serve to make it 5-5. Then it was Fed who got the key break of serve that allowed him to serve out the match. Monaco gave it his best, but it was obvious that he didn't have the game to give Fed much trouble. Yes, Monaco did make Fed work and didn't roll over and hand it to him, so good for him.
There is no question that Berdy will be a much tougher opponent. Although I must say, after watching his match with Murray, that was a hard fought match. Both guys did a lot of running on the court. Berdy served well and played aggressive tennis to get the win. He had to earn it. The question is, will he have enough left to take on Fed? Fed had the easier match by far. Will Berdy be able to replicate this kind of tennis against Fed?
We will see.
I am beyond anxious to see Rafa on court again. It has been too long.

It will be soon, hang in there! Meanwhile we can look forward to the semis and final of Paris and before we know it, Rafa will be back on court in London along with the other top players.

Great win for roger. Allez Rog.
I don't think that Fed had the easier match yesterday. Fed made the match look easy,as he most always does, and it's why some people feel that his matches are easy. However, Monaco didn't hand the match over to roger on a platter, he made Rog work, which made the win much sweeter for this fan.
