Juan Monaco continues to play stellar tennis as he dismantles Gilles Simon in round two of the BNP Paribas Masters on Wednesday. Monaco is through to a third-round clash against Mardy Fish.
Juan Monaco remained in outstanding form by destroying Gilles Simon 6-4, 6-0 in the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Wednesday night. Monaco, who is coming off a runner-up finish at the Valencia Open 500, converted four of nine break chances and advanced after just one hour and 13 minutes.
The Argentine is up to No. 34 in the world and in prime position for an Australian Open seed thanks to his current hot streak. He is now 30-25 for the season after never letting Simon into this match. Monaco broke in the very first game and did the same in the second, as well, en route to a surprisingly easy win.
Simon, on the other hand, finishes his 2011 campaign with a dismal 3-7 record since the U.S. Open. Playing with no confidence of any kind, the 14th-ranked Frenchman served at a mere 48 percent, saw zero break chances, and won a total of 10 points in the second set.
Monaco, who is bouncing back incredibly well from a three-hour loss to Marcel Granollers in the Valencia final, won 25 of 27 first-serve points. He will go up against Mardy Fish for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Losing in Valencia must have been a crushing blow to Monaco which makes his performance so far in Paris even more impressive. He made poor Simon look inept!

I caught some of this match today and was surprised to see how Monaco handle Simon with ease. I was quite surprised, to say the least. Monaco can produce some quality tennis, but not consistently enough. So he likes indoor hard courts?

he likes clay, which is virtually the same thing nowadays

I think Pico is making his case for a DC spot. He may have a better chance on clay, his best surface, than Nalby. Nalby should be on doubles team for sure.
