  • Monaco stays hot, crushes Young in Paris

    11/8/11 9:55 PM | Ricky Dimon
Juan Monaco remains in fine form with a straight-set victory over Donald Young on Tuesday in Paris. Next up for Monaco is second-round meeting with Gilles Simon.

Playing just two days after losing to Marcel Granollers in a grueling Valencia final, Juan Monaco bounced back and hammered Donald Young 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Masters on Tuesday. Monaco saved all four of the break points he faced and advanced in one hour and 19 minutes.

The Argentine faced all four of those break points early in the opening set, thus managing to stay on serve with his relatively in-form opponent. Young finally donated a poor service game and Monaco took advantage for the day's first break. He promptly served out the set without too much trouble at 5-4.

Young went away quietly in the second. The 43rd-ranked American, who finished runner-up to Andy Murray in Bangkok earlier this fall, gave away an initial break when Monaco did some nice scrambling and eventually forced Young to play a backhand overhead, which he dumped in the net. The world No. 34 was never troubled on serve in set two and he wrapped up the proceedings with a routine hold at 5-2.

Young never found the range, striking just 15 winners against a ridiculous 44 unforced errors. Monaco defended well and kept the ball in the court, recording 10 winners and 17 mistakes. Next up for Monaco is Gilles Simon.
