Kohlschreiber advances, Ferrero falls

Qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber is through to the second round in Paris following his straight-set victory over Mikhail Youzhny. Qualifier Nicolas Mahut also advanced, having upended former world No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.
(Q) Nicolas Mahut def. Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-2, 6-3
World No. 95 Nicolas Mahut reached the second round by virtue of his straight-set defeat of Juan Carlos Ferrero. The Frenchman tallied 11 aces en route to a 6-2, 6-3 success in an hour and 13 minutes. Mahut completed the winning effort with five of nine break points converted.
He is slated to take on fourth seed David Ferrer in the next round.

Qualifier Philipp Kohlschreiber made a strong start to the tournament, having ousted Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets. The German collected eight aces and five service breaks, through to a 6-4, 6-2 victory in an hour and 16 minutes. The Russian had trouble with his second serve, winning just 35% of those points.
Kohlschreiber will face 14th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round.
