Jo-Wilfried Tsonga rolls into the third round of the Paris Masters on Tuesday with a straight-set win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. Tsonga awaits either Nicolas Almagro or Andreas Seppi.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga recorded his 50th match win of the season on Tuesday, easing past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-4 in round two of the BNP Paribas Masters. Tsonga fired nine aces without double-faulting and prevailed after one hour and 40 minutes of play.
Garcia-Lopez was competitive most of the way, but the big points were a problem for the underdog. He dropped serve once in the first set and missed both of his break chances. Tsonga closed out the proceedings at 5-3 for an early advantage.
To the chagrin of the French crowd, Garcia-Lopez made a surprising start to the second. The 64th-ranked Spaniard broke for a 4-2 lead and seemed poised to prolong the match. Instead, it only ignited a fire under Tsonga. The world No. 8 promptly won the next four games, breaking for 3-4 and 5-4 before capitalizing on his second match point for victory.
Tsonga converted three of four break opportunities, saved five of six break points, and won 13 of 20 second-serve points. Next up for this week's No. 6 seed is either Nicolas Almagro or Andreas Seppi.
