John Isner advanced to the final four at the BNP Paribas Masters, following his three-set victory over fourth seed David Ferrer. The American is through to face 2008 Paris champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinal.
World No. 25 John Isner recorded his first win against World No. 5 David Ferrer, having held on to oust the veteran Spaniard in three sets. The American struck a dozen aces through to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory in an hour and 47 minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Isner broke to 5-3 in the decider as Ferrer gifted a forehand error. The 26-year-old held triple match point in the ninth game, then closed with an ace. Isner completed the winning effort with two service breaks and 34 winners.
He will take on 6th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the final. The Frenchman passed into the semifinal following the withdrawal of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic.

Ferrer is always a tough opponent. He never phones it in. Isner was serving exceptionally well in this match.
This is a nice run for Isner, having ousted both Lopez and Ferrer. So now the real test against Tsonga. Should be a good one.

It will be a case of who can out-ace the other. Thank goodness the 3rd set will be decided by a tie-break! I think Tsonga should edge this one because he has the better all round game and Isner will have to overcome the raucous crowd support for Tsonga.

I though that Ferrer had chances that he could not take advantage of against Isner. I think Tsonga will be a much more formidable opponent for Isner. He is a big serving guy with an aggressive game. Tsonga has to serve well. The rest of his game flows from that. He has to stay focused and strong. I agree that the crowd support will help him quite a bit. He loves playing in front of his hometown fans. Isner must continue to serve well and bang aces all over the place. Tsonga has the more complete game.
Yes, I am prepared for an ace fest!

I'm not sure of the stats but it struck me isner has not clocked up as many as normal during this tournament.
Assuming 3 sets, place your bets now for how many aces each will serve!
Isner 26 Tsonga 23

I have re-posted this on the new Isner-Tsonga thread.

ed, it's not so much the number of aces with the big servers, it how many their opponents are able to return effectively if at all; because if they only slightly touch the ball it doesn't count as an ace.

So Isner just beat Lopez and Ferrer. Too bad he wasn't in Austin or USA might be playing Argentina.
