11/9/11 2:55 AM | Cheryl Murray
Andy Roddick ran through his second round match against Julien Benneteau in straight sets.
This match was not a study in outstanding tennis. The best that can be said is that Roddick played well enough to beat a rusty Benneteau.
The American, who earns his living largely on the strength of his serve, didn’t have a great serving day. He was decidedly better in the opening set, with 7 aces and a first serve percentage of 76%. Still, Benneteau managed to secure a break of the Roddick serve. Fortunately for the American, Benneteau was shaky on serve and surrendered a pair of breaks.
Roddick’s serve fell apart a bit in the second set. His percentage dropped to 52% and he only put in 2 aces. Benneteau went up an early break, but the Frenchman could not hold onto the lead. Benneteau buckled with the crowd itching to cheer him to a third set.
The American moves into the third round, where he awaits the winner of Andy Murray and Jeremy Chardy.
