Roger Federer eases past Adrian Mannarino in straight sets on Wednesday in Paris. Federer is through to a third-round meeting with Richard Gasquet.
Roger Federer is off to a good start in his quest for a first BNP Paribas Masters title. Federer rolled over Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon and needed just 55 minutes to set up a showdown with familiar foe Richard Gasquet.
The third-seeded Swiss came out firing and capitalized on his second break chance at 2-1 when Mannarino netted a backhand. That was all Federer would have needed because he dropped a mere three points in four service games during the first set. For good measure, though, the 16-time Grand Slam champion added another break at 5-2 to close things out in style.
Set two progressed in almost identical fashion. Federer broke once again at 2-1 and had an opportunity to finish off the match at 5-2. One point from defeat, though, Mannarino forced his opponent into a forehand error and managed to hold. That was it for the 85th-ranked Frenchman, who could only watch as Federer served out the match at love.
Federer fired four aces and lost a hard-to-believe four total points in nine service games. The world No. 4 is 8-2 lifetime against Gasquet, who advanced on Tuesday with a straight-set win over Kevin Anderson.
