  • El Aynaoui fires into Munich semifinals

    5/2/08 8:38 PM | Jonathan Morgan
The ageless wonder Younes El Aynaoui has reached the Munich semis by outgunning Juan Martin Del Potro, 17 years Younes' junior.

With Del Potro coming back from a serious injury that had him out from Australian Open to Miami, about 2 months, Juan Martin was just looking to get himself some matches under his belt before Rome and Hamburg and eventually Roland Garros.

El Aynaoui showed all in attendace doubt as to who was the 36 year old out there. Younes' serve was clicking well, something that he always had as an advantage. His inside-out forehand to the Del Potro backhand was also working quite well, pulling the tall lanky Argentine out wide, allowing El Aynaoui to sneak in with either a volley or an easy put away shot.

El Aynaoui's slice also caused some problems for the tall Argie. Having to bend low to get the ball along with the high quality of the aforementioned slice left Del Potro in a vulnerable position many times. The first set was quite tight with Younes pulling out a single break. The second set was thrilling, despite the fact that the quality dropped slightly. More errors crept into both players' games and 3 breaks were exchanged. El Aynaoui eventually pulled it out at the end 6-4, 6-4.

He will face Fernando Gonzalez in the semifinal.

  • Thumbs up

The fantastic week for El Aynaoui continues.

  • Thumbs down

Del Potro felt he could have won this match, and he could have, but at least he can get to Rome in time for the qualies there.
