Deja-vu all over again with a relative newcomer to the tour beating out a top player, having an amazing week, and reaching the finals. This is 2008.
A 3 hour, 5 minute classic clay court grind fest would be the perfect description of this one.
Bolelli on several occasions was able to run around his backhand and hit a forehand. That is as common as dirt, but instead of hitting it inside out, Simone sent it down the line, surprising the Frenchman on many an occasion and wrong-footing him.
Mathieu is famous for the numerous chokes he has succumed to in his career, the biggest one perhaps being the 2002 Davis Cup final vs. Youzhny. But in this one, Bolelli was serving at 2-4, 15-40. Mathieu was unable to get the double break to really put it away, but got another chance to serve it out at 5-4. Alas, he once again could not do it as he was broken to love. He had yet another chance to rectify hmself, with a few break points in th 5-5 game, but he simply couldn't convert.
Bolelli ended the match in style with a glorious return winner to blast into his first ATP final.
Excellent week for Bolelli reaching his first ATP final.
Yet another tough loss for PHM.
