Argentine Jose Acasuso took on fellow Argie Martin Vassallo Arguello in the second round in Bucharest.
Jose Acasuso had a great start to the 2008 season. He had fantastic results during the spring South American clay court swing. He made the final in Buenos Aires and the semifinal in Acapulco. Since then, he had a round of 16 result in Miami, but his record for the year coming into Bucharest was 22-21.
Vassallo-Arguello is a clay courter who enjoys his best results on the Challenger circuit. He has had no significant runs in a main ATP tournament in 2008, but he made two Challenger finals and a semifinal. The Argentine’s ranking is hovering around the 100 mark (112 right now). He enjoyed a career high ranking of 58 last April.
His match against Vassallo Arguello was more difficult than he might have expected. There were eight breaks of serve in the match - five against Vassallo-Arguello and three against Acasuso. Acasuso just barely managed to sneak ahead of his countryman in each set. He will play Ivan Navarro in the quarterfinals.
