France’s Gilles Simon battles for three sets with Argentine clay-courter Jose Acasuso for a spot in Sunday’s final.
Defending champion Gilles Simon was not at his best in Saturday’s semifinal. He struggled with his baseline game, and he permitted Acasuso to completely outplay him in the first set. An error-strewn set ended with Simon broken twice at the hands of Acasuso.
Most of the second set was not much better for the Frenchman. He was able to trade breaks with Acasuso to force the tiebreaker. Simon played slightly better and finally managed to win the breaker 7-4.
After losing the second set, some of the wind seemed to come out of Acasuso’s sail. He was not able to break Simon’s serve in the third, and the Frenchman won the deciding set with a single break of Acasuso’s serve, which came when Acasuso double-faulted away his opening service game.
Simon has already won two tournaments in 2008, one in Casablanca and the second in Indianapolis. As the 17th-ranked player in the world, he goes into Sunday’s final against Carlos Moya as the favorite for his third title of the year.

Did you know that... Sweden won all grand Slam titles in 1988. Stefan Edberg became the Wimbledon champion and Mats Wilander was victorious in the other three.
